CyberLink also doesn’t include a tutorial during the setup, or any step-by-step instructions as are in the case of Movie Edit Pro and Color Story Photo Studio 10. It also doesn’t seem to let you import an entire folder of multiple files of videos and photos, as you can with those programs. Unlike iMovie, this only lets you add clips at a time. I wanted to use the included Director Zone Templates, so I exported each clip as a separate.avi file, with a soundtrack from my music library. I needed to import them one by one into the program’s editing window, each time choosing a different folder where they came from. Overall, PowerDirector was my favorite program to work with, due to its polished interface and the many new features it delivers. I did miss Ashampoo Movie Edit Pro’s thorough wizard, though.

One of my biggest complaints with CyberLink’s Video Director was that it only works with Windows, as it hasn’t been released yet on Mac and Linux. The other two editors under consideration, Ashampoo Movie Edit Pro and Corel VideoStudio X5, both run on Macs as well as Windows.

The files exported from CyberLink Video Director were a bit shakier than what I get from Movie Edit Pro, possibly due to the larger file size. CyberLink Video Director’s HTML5 capabilities were better than Movie Edit Pro’s H.264 codec, with no jerkiness, though you have to take extra steps for this.

Keep an eye out for CyberLink Director Suite 365 v10.0 at the vendor’s Web site, where it will also be available as a one-year subscription. Will it be the be all, end all? When I heard this feature was coming I thought I’d found the next great thing, but I can’t say I was disappointed. CyberLink doesn’t offer anything that compared to the class of editors I’ve already mentioned, but it still offers a few features that I’d like.
